Change the language of built-in form messages

Smart Forms for Jira displays built-in messages while users complete a form. These include validation errors, warnings, button labels, status messages, and other system-generated text.

You can change the language of this text for each form by using the Current form language setting in the form builder.

English is used by default.

What the language setting changes

The selected form language applies to built-in text shown to users who complete the form:

  • through an external form link;

  • inside a Jira work item.

This includes system-generated text such as:

  • required-field validation messages;

  • minimum and maximum value errors;

  • character-limit messages;

  • file validation messages;

  • navigation button labels;

  • form status messages;

  • warnings and notification flags;

  • submission-related system messages;

  • other interface text that cannot be edited manually.

The setting does not translate the content you added to the form.

What is not translated automatically

Changing the current form language does not translate custom text created by the form owner, including:

  • form name;

  • field labels;

  • field descriptions;

  • help text;

  • placeholders;

  • dropdown and selection options;

  • headings;

  • content text;

  • consent text;

  • custom submission messages;

  • related links or linked page content.

Translate this content manually when creating a localized version of the form.

For example, after changing the system language to French, a required-field error may appear in French, but a field label entered as Department remains in English until you edit it.

Change the current form language

The selected language applies only to the current form. It does not change the language of other forms or the Jira interface.

Default language

New and existing forms use English as the default language until another language is selected.

If you change the language and later return it to English, all supported built-in messages are displayed in English again.
